Guided IHG sites move to a responsive framework by providing design comps in 4 established viewport widths based on Twitter Bootstrap framework. Designed deliverables included visual comps (Photoshop, Sketch + InVision), style guides (InDesign, Photoshop, Webflow, Sketch +InVision), which were required to meet WCAG 2.0 AA-level accessibility guidelines.

Provided visual design leadership for multiple high-profile projects including:

  • Responsive Account Management. The “dashboard” through which loyalty members can manage loyalty accounts, points earnings, and many other functions. This is a complex multi-function application with dynamic display of various elements based on business-defined criteria.
  • Responsive Booking Flow SME. The pages common amongst all IHG brands, used by guests to research, select and book hotel rooms. One major effort was my design of the “Combined Rooms/Rates” page – a high-profile effort which created a more customer friendly experience by reducing steps in the guests’ booking journey by combining two steps, such as select a Room and select a rate),  into one step.
  • Responsive IHG Army Hotels. IHG Army Hotels represents a partnership between IHG and branches of the military (initially US Army) to provide privatized lodging for military personnel and their families -for both official and unofficial travel. This project was very high-profile because the brand site had been stagnant for many years, and there was the impending prospect of adding other military branches to the catalog, thus exponentially increasing the scope and traffic on the site. I served as sole visual designer for the project.
  • Responsive Business Rewards. Mostly a “like-for-like” redesign, the UEA and I took opportunities where possible (time and budget allowing) to make small enhancements to functionality to provide a better experience, especially in mobile viewports. Business Rewards is IHG’s program for rewarding loyalty for “bookers” – guests such as administrative assistants that are booking hotel stays and events for other people. The project required us to expand online booking functionality to 9+ guests in a single booking and allow for the creation and management of events.
  • Responsive Customer Care. Again, a redesign of a static-viewport site into a responsive site based on the Bootstrap viewports.
  • IHG Rewards Club/Kimpton Loyalty integration. I began this project as the visual designer working with a UEA on discovering and organizing the strategy for integrating the recently acquired Kimpton Karma loyalty program with IHG’s existing IHG Rewards Club. This involved finding areas of overlap and redundancy that could be merged as well as identifying divergences that would need to be accounted for or discarded. Midway through the effort, the UEA left IHG and was not replaced. As such, I became the sole point of contact for User Experience, making recommendations to business and working with both IHG and Kimpton colleagues to bring Kimpton Karma in-house while retaining as much as possible of Kimpton’s unique brand and voice.
  • Trip Extras. Designed a responsive interstitial page within the hotel booking flow that would offer upsell enhancements to the guests’ booking prior to payment. Project started out with simply offering to add a rental car from one of a handful of partners with the anticipation of growing the scope of the offerings to include destination experiences, museum tickets, etc.

InterContinental Hotels Group

UI Designer

2007-2012

Served as one of two in-house IHG visual designers. Vetted the designs from outside vendors and ensured compliance with accessibility requirements, followed brand guidelines, and were technically feasible with the corporate technological infrastructure. Developed and delivered the style guides for these projects to the front-end development teams.

  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express redesign 2009. After engaging an outside vendor for broad stroke design direction, the completion of site redesign shifted in-house. I (and one other designer)took the home page designs provided and extrapolated it out into all the other pages in the sites. Because of the volume of pages to be created and delivered, we delivered HTML and CSS to the front-end development team (vs. traditional comps and style guides). This expedited the process of getting the pages built and ultimately launched.
  • Buttons. We were still making buttons as images (not CSS) through 2011 or so. I must have made a million buttons in 9 brands and 11 languages.
